a few words on death and dying

Jonah has been talking a lot about death and reincarnation lately — not that he knows the latter word but the idea is pretty strong for him. Of course his whole take on the issue is kind of adorable…

Our conversation on the way home from preschool went something like this:

Jonah: What happens when people and animals die?
Me: What do you think happens?
J: They come back to life.
Me: Really?
Jonah: Yes! So, we might see Molly the cat again.
Me: And our friend Leila?
Jonah: It could happen. Dalton told Sarah that he died and came back to life.
Me: Oh. I don’t think we are going to see Leila or Molly again.
Jonah: You never know!

Those are some deep thoughts for a little boy. We have conversations about people who have died monthly sometimes weekly. They are short, but it really gives insight into what they are thinking.

@ Heather: I’m glad to hear that the topic is not unusual. I do like getting that window – and hearing his thoughts rather than trying to shape them at this point. He doesn’t seem at all disturbed by it although at other times the concept of loss can be very difficult for him.

    @ Lilan: Totally!
