nesting gone wild

I’ve bought things. I’ve returned things. I’ve had two baby showers. Our house has boxes of baby gear in every room, half-opened boxes from recent shipments, bags and boxes wherein I’ve made some attempts to organize all the stuff, stuff, stuff.

I’m two weeks from my due date. All I do is get bigger and slower, and ask Scott to do more things for me.

“This weekend, we have got to get this stuff organized and put away,” I say to him.

Yes, dear.

The last two nights, I have had a new kind of insomnia that involves being wide-awake at 3 a.m., and sleeping fitfully later on in the morning. In addition, today I woke up with a sore throat. So Scott put on his superhero cape and went out into the world to do our errands for us. There was the new rug that needed washing in an industrial size washer at the laundromat, not to mention all our bedding, pillows, etc.; the farmers’ market; the grocery store; a stop at a comic book store (a man has needs)…

I stayed home and folded the clean laundry that’s been sitting in the basket all week, cleaned up my office, straightened the living room.

Teamwork.

Scott came home for lunch and then we really dug in. The baby’s closet needed to be cleared of office supplies, boxes of memorabilia, old photography gear, unused picture frames — much of which had to be moved to the basement, by Scott — before anything could be put away.

Then there was separating the baby clothes into piles by age: what he’ll be able to wear right away, what is 6, 9, 12, and 18 months down the line.

There was also the taking the toys, accessories, swaddlers, snuzzlers, et.al. out of their various vinyl packages.

There was the attempt at washing the one baby blanket knit by a relative who smokes. Amazingly, the blanket smelled worse AFTER the washing. Not sure of the alchemy on that. It’s currently airing out in the basement…

We’re not all put together and put away yet, but getting closer. And we still have Sunday.

I am two weeks from my due date. Baby could come tomorrow, or a month from now.

I hope it’s not a month from now. I don’t think I can handle much more waddling, bloating, aching, not-sleeping, and nesting.
