sitting and talking

Today, when we walked into the nursery to greet Jonah from his morning nap, he was sitting up in his crib to receive us, smiling.

This is extraordinary because he’s never gone from lying down to sitting up on his own, ever.

We don’t know how he got there. Mother In Law thinks maybe he pulled himself up using the crib bars. He’s been pulling up on things, mostly climbing us. He took a stab at a stair the other day.

Still doing his perfectly charming elbows and belly army crawl to get around though.

He’s also possibly getting a handle on his “other” first word (besides “Whoa,” and “Ohhh,” both of which he uses in context, frequently). “Cat.” Well, not really the whole cat. But “Ca!” — and while looking at said animal. He also says “Kih Kih” which could be “Kitty.” The kicker is that when you ask him “Where’s the cat?” he looks right at the cat. Or looks around for him if he’s not in the room.

MIL has been in town since Thursday and we’re doing our best to wear her out. She’s a trooper. Came straight off the plane to a quick sandwich at the house and then off to sign language class with a subset of my moms group. Friday she came with us to the extended long-playing super duper mom-baby yoga class. Saturday we took her to a wedding in the Presidio, followed by a trip across the Golden Gate and a stroll in Sausalito. Today, except for the Farmer’s Market and a trip to Lakeshore, mostly, we rested.

Hee. Flanny’s first word is also “cat.” I guess we know where their true affections lie.

My friend’s baby’s first word was buh – looking at a pigeon – bird.

Isn’t it cool when they start letting you know that they have words? Like the looking around for the cat. And TWO words for cat, ki-ki and ca? Cool!

How fun for grandma – you are showing her a truly good time. Especially the mommy-baby yoga, I’ll bet she hasn’t done THAT before…

The speech therapy and developmental people all used to tell me that language development is related to physical development, that belly crawling through tunnels or obstacle courses (stairs) is crucial to forming words. Something about the nueral system, I can’t remember exactly. Crawling organizes language is the simple concept.

As I look over the last three weeks of posts I can see that J’s words and physical milestones are barreling along together. Seems to reinforce this concept.

The therapists all LOVE to see belly scooching and GI-Joe-like behavior. They will make children crawl who never did it before walking. They say it’s good for verbal and neuro development to crawl and belly-scooch even once the kid can walk on two legs.
