must write something

Hello.

I’m so glad you’re still here.

Me? I’ve been busy.

Well, yesterday, we went to mom and baby yoga, and had lunch with one of our mom friends, and did a little shopping, and met another mom friend for a play date. Well, she and I played with each other, her daughter played on the park’s play structures, and Jonah slept while parked in his baby bucket, which, for him, is as important as playing.

And today we had lunch with another mom friend at a Mexican restaurant that has a nice big bathroom with a changing station. (I hear that a book is going to come out soon that will detail the location of such baby-rrific bathrooms in the Bay Area, among other parent-friendly city guidance. Sign me up. Or rather, %#&*! Why didn’t I think of writing that book?!?)

And Jonah fell asleep in his bucket after lunch and we got to go shopping. For swim diapers! For our upcoming Hawaii trip. (Hey, wait… What am I going to wear in the water??? Gulp.) Now I need to research floatation devices, not that I plan to teach him to swim, but rather, if I’m going to hold him over or in any size body of water, I’d like some back up. Maybe floaties — and a tether of some kind? (I can barely relax during his baths.)

By the way, is anyone else experiencing chaos in the sleep department due to the constitutional incompatibility between daylight savings and babies?

He passed out on my shoulder just a bit ago and I was so surprised, not at all prepared for that to be his big 5-hour sleep. But off he goes.

And now, if he would just go… poop.

It’s been 4 days. This is our first official poop strike. I called the doctor, just to check, but yes, she says, this is not unusual for breastfed babies. I think she said it’s normal for up to 6 days. So time is running out, little buddy. Let’s get those bowels moving. Of course, when it does finally happen, it’s going to be HISTORIC.

In the meantime, we continue with the gripe water and baby-dophilus. We’d stopped the gripe at first because little boy J. wasn’t having none of it. Screwed up his face and cried cried cried. But it dawned on me a few days ago that I could mix it in breastmilk and give it to him in a bottle. And voila! But now that means I really have to pump everyday.

Nobody likes to pump. Ugh.

In other news, I’ve discovered a new thing to feel guilty about. Baby booking. Supposedly this blog is my baby book for Jonah. And it certainly is a record. But it is so much more about me than him. Well, it’s a mix. Anyway, my mom wasn’t the scrapbooking type, and I never pictured myself doing such either.

But so many moms have recently lamented to me about the baby book they haven’t started yet, or how they won’t have the same vim for it with impending baby number two as they did with the first one. So I thought I should feel guilty, too.

I did save that stick with the two pink lines on it. And our hospital bracelets. And maybe one day soon we’ll print some of the pictures.

Or at least upload the new ones we took by backyard the plum tree, all in bloom.

Oh, don’t feel guilty about a baby book. My son is getting close to 4, and I still have empty photo albums — ones that I even purchased — because I’m horrible about getting prints made (I think I managed to get one small album done). But I’m pretty good at uploading to Flickr so it mostly works out. Except for my mother-in-law… who doesn’t do computers. Then I feel a little bit guilty about the lack of prints.

Oh, instead of a baby book, I have a baby box of stuff. Maybe someday I’ll organize it. Or not.

Yes — I am like Leanne. I haven’t regularly printed photos since my daughter was 9 months old, and she’s now nearly 6!

Re Hawaii, I think you can get a Bjorn that’s made to go in water, if you want to go that route.

Re. the poop strike: My doctor says that up to eight days can be normal. Case in point: baby in my moms’ group hadn’t pooped for eight days, and of course chose a meeting to do the deed. She pooped so much it came out the sleeves of her onesie; okay, that was more detail than you needed, but she was totally fine, just very messy.

Leanne and MM — am so glad I’m not alone!

Laura — You win the prize for prescience. He pooped twice during moms group this morning. No sleeve action though. His poops were very reasonably-sized.

Glad to hear that he finally pooped!

I’m so totally with you on the daylight savings time thing. Hate it. He’s sleeping in the morning when he needs to be getting up so that we can go places, and he’s awake at night when I need to go to bed. I am not a fan!

Glad to hear the poop fairy arrived; an wasn’t TOO well laden.

Just to let you know that I’ve heard up to three weeks is still OK! Not that I’ve had a poop strike yet. (I follow your blog with avid interest, as my Little One was born 14th November. Found it through DaMomma. Ain’t the internet marvellous!)
