Inspired by my clothing rant this morning, I unearthed my black-and-white bias-striped and fringed shawl from my clothing vault.
The shawl is a few years old, and was startlingly fashionable (dare I say “Rock Star”) when I bought it… With the passage of time, it had burrowed to the bottom of the scarf drawer, hiding from my belief that it had passed its use-by date.
But shawls, shawls, shawls! They are so forgiving. They don’t care how pregnant you are. They just fit.
So here I am, out in the world, in my black and white shawl, black pants, black t-shirt, white tank top, white purse, black shoes, white laptop computer… practically a fashion statement:
And I didn’t even really pick up on the connection until after I’d ordered it that my sandwich fit the theme:
Olive tapenade and fresh mozzarella on ciabatta bread, called, yes, a “Black and White.”
Even the fact that someone hit my car — again — today, the back end this time, (even though I had parked in a HUGE, EMPTY parking lot with miles of space around my lone little car on all sides) pales in relation to the pleasure I receive from my stylish outfit. It helps that the guy left a note. And that I know exactly where I can go to get it fixed. And that, just maybe, this means I’ll get more of my nine-year-old car re-painted with the help of insurance money. Woo hoo! A little refurbishing for everyone.
I never used a diaper service (I used cloth with N~ until W~ was born), but I don’t think that they usually use rubber pants anymore. When I looked at diaper services, I seem to remember a lot of them using Prowraps. Most cloth diaper covers are material that is treated on one side. I don’t know if diaper services offer them, but I loved Fuzzi Bunz (www.fuzzibunz.com). I’d stuff them with traditions prefold diapers right out of the drier, then using them wasn’t that much different than putting on a disposable.
If you do go with traditional prefold diapers, I’d definitely recommend getting a few Snappi’s. They are totally easy to use, and you never have to worry about sticking the baby with a pin.
I play with the idea of going back to cloth (especially if I could find my Fuzzi Bunz–they mysteriously “disappeared” during one of my husband’s cleaning jags), but it is a lot to do with two kids in diapers, especially when you’re washing them yourself.
You know, all you need to be in in Berlin is a shawl, or a scarf, whatevah. Come here for fashion forgiveness.
WE had a diaper service but we ended up using the clean ones for extra spit-up cloths. NObody wanted to deal with the pins and the mess. THen we had 2d baby 18 months after the first; add medical issues for both kids and we just gave up on cloth. You can only do what you can do.
