I was wrong. The bubbles bribe only worked that one time. Oh well. Moving on…
I was also wrong about weaning. Sort of. He nursed before bed tonight. Though I stopped him short of nursing himself to sleep. I just really don’t think that works for him. As much as I liked Weissbluth, his repeated promises that nursing to sleep was not a problem and that co-sleeping would not cause night waking, both turned out not to be true in our case. Mindell was more on point for us in those areas.
Today it seems clear that any pottying we’re doing right now has no relationship to “training,” but rather, in classic Elimination Communication form, has to do with us recognizing the SIGNS that a poop is a-comin’ and getting him to the potty and disrobed in time. This includes his saying words like poop and potty, the relevant body sounds, and it includes us misreading the signs and spending good portions of our day in the bathroom with no tangible results, other than how much fun it is for him to sit on a throne of sorts and play with us at eye level seated on the floor in front of him, with the bubbles, books, cards, hearts, et. al.
I’m still glad we’re doing it. Every diaper we don’t use is money saved and environmentally a positive. Plus his butt stays cleaner.
He’s so very verbal that I bet he’ll be trained well before two years barring some toddler resistance whackitoode that so far he shows no signs of developing. You rock.
