sick redux

Have we ever stopped being sick? I think there was one day last week. Fortunately, at least, Scott and I have managed to switch off worst days, and so spell each other on the childcare.

We’re pretty sure Jonah’s second round of recent stomach distress was contagious and eventually got both me and my visiting MIL, unless it was mild food poisoning. Tough to say without a lab test.

The worst of it was this:

A few days back, Scott wakes up around 7, thinks, wow, how nice that Jonah is letting us sleep in. He starts coffee, putters in the kitchen. Finally wanders into the nursery to check on the boy who is quietly awake, and covered in vomit and diarrhea.

It’s everywhere. All over his hair, the bed, in a puddle on the floor from where he clearly stood up and hurled over the railing.

The question is, how the heck did ALL THIS happen in the night without us hearing any of it? How did he not cry his head off? WTF?????????

And he was so calm about it in the morning. Didn’t even fight the diaper removal, though he was none to happy about all the bathing we inflicted on him next.

The following three nights, sleep was problematic. Late night wakings, with much anguish (post traumatic stress?). A new morning wake-up time of 4:30 a.m.

(I was mentally writing the blog post: sleep, why hast thou forsaken me?)

But he must be feeling better because last night we got a 6:30-5:30 stretch. Thank goodness.

And did I mention it’s been raining and ICY cold, for days and days? We were well enough to brave the elements today for lunch out at our favorite Mexican place where Jonah’s Bunny God lives (Beans! Meat!) and then a quick trip to the ever so visually stimulating IKEA (Round! Leaf! Bowls!) followed by a cruise through the mildly diverting kids’ books section at the local Barnes and Noble. (Caterpillar! Fishies! Sheep!)

Now we’re back home, in the nice warm, playing with our toys.

Isn’t stomach flu the grossest with little ones? Anytime Eva had rotovirus from ages 0-2 I just cringed over how gross life was going to be for two or three days minimum. One time she had diarrhea in her high chair and it was so profuse it was all over her, her chair, the floor, everywhere. UGH. She was even hospitalized with rotovirus at one point because she needed fluids so bad, I stopped diapering her for a week and just kept her on those hospital chuck thingies.

Although now that she’s potty trained, it may honestly be just as gross when she has had uncontrollable diarrhea, I’m not sure. Does Jonah like popsicles? That may help him feel better- at least emotionally! Eva loves them when she’s sick.

Oh, you poor guys! And what the hell is it with kids waking up at the slightest noise and then sleeping calmly as frat boys in their own puke? Flann’s been coughing himself silly for days now and I think coughed himself into barfing last night in his sleep…yes, he was calmly asleep in a puddle this AM. The weather isn’t helping. I’m feeling all Yellow Wallpaper with this rain and not being able to take the kid to the park. Bring back the drought! Sympathies times six.

So sorry that you’ve been sick. Stomach bugs are the worst. I always say no one ever tells you about the bodily fluids before you have kids, because if they did the human race would expire. Hope you stay well. This winter has been brutal for us too.
