new things

Yesterday, we let him try an organic strawberry popsicle. Is that bad? Just a lick. Or two. We figured the icy coldness would feel good on his gums. Of course I worried about food allergies after, but his throat didn’t swell up so we’re good for now.

He seems verrrrry interested in food. He watches us eat and makes little mwomp mwomp motions with his mouth. He’s even reached for things that were heading into my mouth at least twice.

* * *

Last night we put him down in the bassinet and when we came into the room later he was sleeping ON HIS SIDE. Wowwwwwwwww!

This morning, I put him on a blanket on the bed and then used the blanket to help him roll over. I swear, it was his idea. Every time I rolled him over, and then back, he just beamed.

* * *

We had another lovely out-all-day day. He fell asleep in the car on the way to yoga and slept through that, and most of lunch. Over two hours! He’d skipped his first nap of the day so perhaps he was “consolidating” as they say.

I learned today that my friend, who I believed had the most best sleepingest baby, her baby doesn’t nap well at all. She’s a champ at night, but during the day — barely 20 minutes at a stretch. So, let’s just say, it helps to get the whole story before you start assuming, and I’m not-so-secretly glad that I got to feel like my boy is excelling at something in the sleep department. Especially since he was up every two hours again last night (and that was without any iced tea on my part, so no dice there).

    Have you come across ‘baby-led weaning?’ That’s what we’re planning. Much easier than purees and such like. And if he wants the food, he can/will take it. I joke and say that whatever he can steal from my plate, he can have…

    Oh, and we’re getting a Stokke Tripp Trapp highchair, too, so he can sit right up at the table with us.

    (And a popsicle? Bet he loved that.)

    Oh, and as to sleep, my Alex only sleeps during the day on my lap or in the buggy – so I make a lot of little trips to the local shops! He sleeps overnight from about 7.30 until 7.30 – in our bed, and I breastfeed him to sleep.

    And you know something? I don’t care if it is against any baby book; it works for us, it works for him, and he has gradually changed his routine *himself* so it has all been easy and gentle. So if it works for *you*, who cares?!

    I envied one mum whose baby slept brilliantly during the day in her cot, and she said she envied *me* because her little one would *only* sleep in the cot, whereas I could take Alex anywhere – at that time, I was sitting on a friend’s couch with Alex draped over my shoulder fast asleep.

    {{Hugs}} I think you are doing brilliantly!

    Oh dear, Liz — you know how much am not looking forward to all that work!

    Gillian — Thank you for the hugs! I am grateful my boy seems to be an anywhere-sleeper …I LIKE that high chair…He did enjoy the popsicle very much…I’ll have to look up that baby led weaning. Sounds like something I would like.
