shhhhhh… he’s napping

Well, the let’s sit up and nurse in the night experiment revealed that in fact, yes, I get more sleep if I don’t do that. Nap nursing, here I come back. Not only can the boy nurse on one boob for an hour while I’m sitting up and fading in and out of consciousness, but also, in that position, I am more awake overall, can’t get back to sleep. Ugh.

Back to square one, or two, whatever.

He’s sleeping right now. Luck? Resolve? I don’t know. But he’s down for a morning nap. Here’s to hoping it lasts longer than 15 minutes.

In other news, I forgot to mention… we’ve weaned him off the swaddle. It was happening a little before the trip but for some reason, on vacation, we just stopped using it. He doesn’t seem to need it to fall asleep or stay asleep anymore. If he’s freaking out, I wouldn’t rule out wrapping him up to calm him, but overall, I think we’re making our way out of that “fourth trimester.”

The other thing I haven’t said, though I’m thinking it a lot, is that on the vacation, I got to fully appreciate the joy of disposable diapers. Most specifically, he was less fussy because he was less wet. Since he was less wet, I got to change him less often. And the cloth diaper people swear this can’t be true, but I think he had less diaper rash too.

Oh landfill. We’re back to cloth for now. Scott and I both feel like it’s a cozier thing, sweeter. But I’m not-so-secretly considering a defection.

And, forget the EC thing. We haven’t had success with that in weeks and weeks. I have held him over the toilet, the sink, an infant potty, numerous times, with no results. I still give a cue sound when he pees on the changing table. He thinks that’s pretty funny.

Hooray on weaning him off the swaddle! I was terrified to take Flann’s swaddle off, but it went really easily (more of a crutch for me than for him). And guilty confession: I use only disposable diapers. He’s never gotten any diaper rash, so I’m hooked.

Wow – I’m impressed – we swaddled our boys for several months! Good choice of name, by the way :)

Hm, who knows about the diaper rash. My baby wears mostly cloth, occasionally disposable, and has never had it. It’s supposedly from not changing enough but I’m sure you do that — who wouldn’t. Maybe your baby’s skin is more sensitive.

Do you use chemicals on his wipes? Apparently that could cause irritation. We use mostly plain, warm water on cloth wipes. If it’s messy, we use a very diluted mix of all natural body soap and olive oil (and about 95% water.) All of this is pre-mixed in a big dispenser. We also always dry her before putting a diaper back on.

Yes, Athena, we change him constantly AND his skin is verrrrry sensitive.

I use the Whole Foods generic wipes which are I think chemical free, but the recipe for homemade wipes is intriguing. Thanks!
