When it began, it began with an “oh.”
Sometimes it was so soft, it was barely a whisper. More like an out breath. Tiptoeing past his lips as he held them for a long time in position, rounded open; with a little bit of a glottal kick to get it out the door:
“kuh-oh.”
Now he’s got the “oh” down, and the “ah.” And “gurgh.” “”Ungh.” “Aguh.” And “eaaayarg.” Sometimes the more open sounds get a wide-eyes on top.
When I’m talking on the phone, he talks along.
He’s also added hand gestures. As of Sunday, the hands now reach the head. Generally one hand is grasping the top of his ear, while the other rests on his cheek or chin. As if to say, “I am thoughtful,” or “Oh my.” Or sometimes, “Oh dear” — this last one when his eyes travel to one side and then down, punctuated with a blink.
He also tilts his head to one side slightly. Probably an artifact of not quite yet being able to steady his head. A little shrug. “I am cute? Well, if you say so.”
And last but not least, there’s the blinky fluttery thing with smile he does when you lean over to kiss his nose and your hair tickles his face.
Like when snowflakes fall on your cheeks.
and the next thing you know, he’ll be saying “MOM! MOOOOOOM! Get me my sippy cup and take me to college!”
