we have entered the era of the noisy toy

Some mothers are assiduous about avoiding plastic. Others diligently acquire intelligence boosting toys like black-and-white everything and Baby Einstein (when that was, you know, the thing).

I’d managed, up to now, to avoid toys that would emit sounds that make me tear at my hair and scratch my eyes out. Before this week, he had . . . → Read More: we have entered the era of the noisy toy

jonah’s birthday

Jonah is 2 today. Right now we’re in Nana and PopPop’s house. They’re still sleeping. Scott is building giant towers out of Duplos with the birthday boy.

He is an extraordinary boy.

He has a way of wanting things a certain way, which I think is about being two, and possibly about being a budding . . . → Read More: jonah’s birthday

What sound? What do you hear? It’s . . . → Read More: see the sound

Jonah and I are in the car driving to music class this morning. We’re listening to classical music, commenting to each other about the construction vehicles we see as we pass them by.

Out of nowhere, he says, “Leila is all gone.”

I am completely taken aback.

“Yes, Jonah,” I say, “Leila is all gone.”

best. halloween. ever.

Scott and I are generally not big holiday people. Halloween, especially, is not our holiday. We don’t much care for dressing up or spending money on costumes. One year, early in our couplehood, we did make an effort, like the cool kids do. We went to a used clothing store, found these outlandish silver “gowns” . . . → Read More: best. halloween. ever.
